Stage Lighting Workshop for Theatre Students in Yerevan

1

On April 28, an educational lecture titled “Stage Lighting: From Fundamentals to Global Trends” was held for students of the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinematography, organized by Sound Creations.

The session was led by industry professionals with international project experience: Mark Stavtsev (Sound Creations), Ksenia Igoshkina (Ayrton), and Dmitry Dragunov (ETC).

Students from the undergraduate Directing program and graduate students from the Theatre Faculty took part in the lecture. The session aimed to develop an understanding of light as a tool for stage expression, while also providing hands-on experience with professional lighting solutions.

A key element of the program was its practical format. Students not only explored the fundamentals of stage lighting but also had the opportunity to work directly with professional equipment — a format rarely accessible in academic environments. During the session, participants examined lighting control workflows, key fixture types, and essential effects such as pan/tilt, zoom, gobo, shutter, color, and dimming. The training also covered different categories of lighting fixtures — from wash lights to profile and multi-source fixtures based on Ayrton and ETC technologies.

This hands-on approach enables a faster transition from theory to practical understanding of how stage environments are created and how visual dramaturgy is shaped through light.

“In most educational environments, access to lighting equipment of this level is extremely limited. It is impossible to develop professional specialists without hands-on practice. That is why we focus on creating conditions where students can work with real technologies. At that moment, light stops being an abstract concept and becomes a working tool,” says Mark Stavtsev, lighting designer and Sales Manager for Ayrton, ETC, and Robert Juliat at Sound Creations

Such lectures are part of Sound Creations’ broader educational initiative. The company operates not only as a distributor of professional AV equipment in Central Asia and the Caucasus, but also as a technology and education partner, creating an environment for practical engagement with modern audio-visual solutions.

Sound Creations is launching an educational program for students in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia. Further details will be announced soon.
