Opened in 2005, the Allianz Arena in Munich is one of Europe’s most iconic football stadiums. Renowned for its exterior façade composed of nearly 3,000 translucent, air-filled cushions, it was the first stadium in the world capable of displaying a fully color-changing exterior. Inside, its three-tier bowl accommodates more than 75,000 spectators and serves as the home stadium of FC Bayern Munich, hosting major national and international sporting events in compliance with UEFA standards.
Upgrading the stadium’s sound system required meeting a complex set of acoustic, architectural, and regulatory demands. The sheer scale of the venue, combined with its membrane roof structure, created challenging acoustic conditions, including pronounced reverberation across the spectator areas.
achieving consistent and even sound pressure levels across all three seating tiers;
improving speech intelligibility for announcements and safety messaging;
enhancing audio quality for music playback and event content;
complying with strict weight limitations imposed by the roof structure;
preserving sightlines and the stadium’s distinctive architectural aesthetics.
Allianz Arena stakeholders were clear: the audio system had to deliver performance at the highest professional level without visually intruding on the stadium’s design.
Following extensive acoustic analysis and system modeling, the project team selected an L-Acoustics Kara line source system as the core solution. Its combination of low weight, precise directivity control, and high output made it particularly well suited for the Allianz Arena’s architectural and acoustic constraints.
“An L-Acoustics Kara system offers an almost ideal ratio of weight, precision of coverage, achievable sound pressure level, and sound quality,” - Harald Frisch, Sound Engineer, Müller-BBM.
Special attention was given to directing energy toward the audience while minimizing reflections from the roof and structural surfaces. The resulting design delivered controlled coverage across the entire bowl while maintaining clarity and impact.
The complete installation comprises:
266 Kara line source elements forming the main PA system
54 SB18 subwoofers supporting low-frequency impact
48 ARCS WiFo loudspeakers deployed as delay arrays in curved seating areas
70 5XT coaxial compact loudspeakers installed beneath balconies for near-field coverage
The system is powered by 110 LA4X amplified controllers, delivering a total system output of 440,000 watts. Amplification is distributed across ten central amplifier locations, each housing two 40U system racks, ensuring redundancy, serviceability, and efficient signal distribution.
L-Acoustics provided system design support and final calibration to ensure the installation met performance targets and UEFA operational requirements.
The upgraded audio system delivers uniform coverage, high intelligibility, and powerful yet controlled sound throughout the stadium. From match-day announcements to large-scale events, the system performs reliably under demanding conditions.
Jürgen Muth, Managing Director of Allianz Arena München Stadion GmbH, commented: “The new Kara PA system is the result of trusted cooperation with our technology partner Wilhelm & Willhalm and Müller-BBM as the executive planning office. With L-Acoustics, we selected one of the world’s leading professional audio manufacturers—offering an outstanding combination of sound quality, flexibility, and cost efficiency.”
